ShtetLink. Alternate names: Zagłębie, Zaglembie, Zaglembia. Zagłębie is a highly industrialised region of southern Lesser Poland bordering Silesia through the Brynica river running between Sosnowiec and Katowice. Apart from the three main cultural and industrial centres of the area (Dąbrowa Górnicza, Sosnowiec and Będzin), the region also includes  Czeladź, Wojkowice, Siewierz and Sławków, and smaller villages of Psary, Ożarowice, Bobrowniki and Mierzęcice. The borders of the region were never clearly defined. Other towns are sometimes listed among the cities of Zagłębie: Zawiercie, Poręba, Włodowice, Kroczyce, Ogrodzieniec, Łazy and Olkusz. Yizkor. At the start of WWII, 100,000 Jews lived in the Zagłębiearea. On August 12, 1942, all the Jews of the region were gathered. After a selection, 12,500 of them deemed unfit for work were sent to Aushwitz for immediate extermination. The reswere sent to slave labor camps. [July 2009]
