Located at 48°56′39″N 20°33′39″E in Kosice Region, Spišská Nová Ves Region, 167.1 miles ENE of Bratislava, 31 miles W of Prešov (Eperjes), 35 miles WNW of Košice (Kassa). Alternate names: Spišská Nová Ves [Slov], Igló [Hun], Zipser Neuendorf [Ger], Nowa Wieś Spiska [Pol], Spišská, Neudorf, Iglov, Iglau. Jewish Population in 1900 was 620. Before WWI, Igló was in Szepes District, Slovakia Province.

US Commission No. SLCE000058: Spisska Nova Ves is located in Spisska Nova Ves, N of Roznava. The flat suburban location, separate but near other cemeteries, has no sign or marker. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all via a broken masonry wall and no gate. 20-100 20th century marble and granite flat shaped tombstones with German and Hebrew inscriptions are in original locations. Adjacent properties are cemetery. Rarely, private visitors stop. Security and pollution are serious threats; vandalism is a very serious threat.

From Barkany's book Zvidovske Nabozenske Obce Na Slovenska: "East of city, after railroad bridge. Cemetery almost totally destroyed. 20mx90m long. Men and women buried together. Terrain flat. There was once an older cemetery on Balu/monde (1870-1900)." The cemetery is at the end of many rows of garages and surrounded by a wall over which I climbed. The wall was still in one piece in 1992. There is an entrance on the road, but I have no information about how to get in that way. At first glance, I thought it was just a walled-in field. Once, I started kicking around in the grass, I found nine stones, but am convinced there are more under very tough grass. Source: Paul Klein pklein5ATgmail.com [1992]

Near a major trade route that connected Hungary with Krakow, Poland, Spisske Nova Ves, dating from 1268, was close to the mining town of Roznava and an important mining and pottery center. http://peacecorpsonline.org/messages/messages/2629/2015331.html and http://www.geocities.com/eli_fenichel/slovakia.htm have 2003 story of Peace Corps volunteer and restoration of the cemetery."Fenichel's after-hours projects included beginning the restoration of an old Jewish cemetery, from which many of the grave markers had been removed for paving stones. A local high school history teacher has since taken over the cemetery project. Fenichel met a 90-year-old Jewish woman who is the only surviving Jew in Spisska Nova Ves. During World War II, the Nazis sent her and Slovakia's other Jewish citizens to concentration camps, where most of them died. The woman had survived four years in the camps, three of them in Auschwitz, and returned to her home after liberation." The cemetery may have 350 memorial markers. [November 2008]
