City Cemetery: (FLORIDA HISTORIC CEMETERY #2). City Cemetery, Windsor Lane, Key West FL 33040. This second oldest cemetery in the state was founded in 1865. Congregation B'nai Zion, Florida's first congregation (since 1877) owns a section, with an entrance on Francis Street. Early graves date to 1880s. All records are in the sexton's office at main gate. The U.S. Navy Plot, dedicated on December 11, 1898, contains a monument paid for by citizens of Key West in memory of the 27 sailors killed in Havana when the battleship Maine exploded and sank in Havana Harbor, beginning the Spanish-American War. UPDATE: The Spanish-American War of 1898 is marked by the sinking of the USS Maine in Havanna harbor. The mast of the vessel was retrieved and now is located at the main Key West, Florida cemetery. This cemetery has a Jewish section in accordance with Halacha. The Executive Officer of the USS Maine appointed to investigate the sinking of the vessel was Jewish and was later promoted to Admiral.
