This Algarve town has a medieval 14th century Jewish cemetery and a second cemetery used from 1838-1932, now preserved by declaration of "national interest".Of the 106 graves, 71 have tombstones listed in Jose Maria Abecassis' book Genealogia Hebraica, Lisbon 1991.

"This well maintained Sephardic cemetery is located in the center of the city,
on land donated by a wealthy Jewish man. The large hospital in the city
is right across the street; this same man also donated the property for the building of
the hospital.
"The cemetery manager who greets visitors is not Jewish,
but wears a kippah and is a university professor
