Olga Parker supplied the following from the book Mount Moriah, the Story of Deadwood's Boot Hill; Helen Rezatto Y1980, Aberdeen, SD: North Plains Press, (p. 35): "The Deadwood Cemetery Association was organized in 1892 … The first group to purchase burial ground for its members was the Hebrew Society in July, 1890, for $200". David Akrop of Deadwood Granite & Marble Works, 142 Sherman Street, Deadwood, SD 57732) sent pages 266 and 267 from the original Deadwood Cemetery Book indicating the Hebrew Cemetery Association purchased lots 48 to 167 (inclusive) in Section 4 for the Hebrew Cemetery at a cost of $200. He said that the Jewish burials were administered by the Hebrew Association and are within the lot numbers indicated above. "…The date of death is generally the date of burial taken directly from the Cemetery Book. In those cases where a stone is in place I took the dates from the stone so they would be the actual death date."
I just returned from a visit to Mount Moriah cemetery in Deadwood, SD, (October 15, 2000). According to the Walking Tour Guide to Mt. Moriah Cemetery, the cemetery is owned and maintained by the City of Deadwood. Several notable Jewish families of Deadwood were listed in the Guide. This cemetery also contains the graves of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. The Jewish section at the highest point of the cemetery is located between "Paul Street" and "Hiram Street" and bordered on the west by "Jerusalem Street."
