Local funeral home and/or monument maker: Oravitz Funeral Home, 40. N. Jardin St., Shenandoah, PA 17976, 570-462-9333.
Hebrew Cemetery: 1887-1949 Several headstones in the cemetery are only in Hebrew. A most unusual cemetery because, except for the telltale monuments, one feels as if in a park, with well kept lawns, and benches in the circular areas shown on the map. The caretaker is to be commended for his management of this truly beautiful and peaceful place.
Sign at entrance reads "Hebrew Cemetery", but known by Jewish residents as "KEHILLATH ISRAEL CEMETERY" Person to contact about cemetery (grave locations): This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33308. 561-859-6989
. The still active suburban cemetery was established in 1887. The site has a caretaker. Located on a hillside , the site is separate, but near other cemeteries. Access to the cemetery is open to all. A broken masonry wall and broken fence with a gate that does not lock surround the site. No separate section. One hundred to five hundred 19th and 20th century marble and granite tombstones are finely smoothed and inscribed stones with English and Hebrew inscriptions. The cemetery contains special memorial monuments to Jewish soldiers. The vegetation overgrowth in the cemetery is not a problem. Water drainage at the cemetery is good all year. B.
