Harrisburg has a sizeable Jewish community with continuous existence back to 1848, with a substantial Litvak presence since 1881.

Beth El Cemetery: (Conservative) on S. Progress Ave., Harrisburg, PA 17100; 564-5040; in Paxton Borough ("down the road" from KI and Chisuk Emuna). Used in the early 1930's. Beth Sholom Cemetery: (Reconstructionist) Lisburn Road and Route 114, Lisburn, PA 17110. Directions: Cross the Susquehanna River. Go to Front and Foster to cross using the Harvey Taylor Bridge. Stay on Route 15 until you come to Rossmoyne Road. Take this road to the stop sign and bear right. Go 1.5 miles to fork in road. Take left branch, which brings you out to lower Allen playground. Make right and go to cemetery. In use since about 1985, with about 25 graves of 1,700 available, the Beth Shalom synagogue's cemetery is always open. Chisk Emuna Cemetery: (Conservative) 34th St. off Progress Ave. Chisuk Emunah Perpetual Care Association: (Conservative): P.O. Kesher Israel Cemetery: (Orthodox) next to Chisk Emuna on 34th St. There is another entrance off Rt 22. Contact person: Eunice Press, Phone: (717)545-1081. Always open; used by Kesher Israel. Ohev Sholom Cemetery (old): 3400 Oliver Road; founded 1855. Ohev Sholom/Mt Moriah (Reform) is near the Colonial Park Shopping Center. This is the larger. Workman's Circle: On Old Orchard Lane off Progress Ave., behind old township bldg. This is an Orthodox cemetery, which contains 20+ gravestones, of which about 13 graves date from the early 1900's.
