Mostly, (Rheinland) German Jewish shopkeepers in the 1880s settled this Ozark community.

 

The synagogues are 1893 Temple Israel (Reform, new building in 1933) and Sha'are Zedek (Orthodox). The two congregations shared a cemetery organized by fraternal Jewish organization. Sha'are Zedek paid off the mortgage Temple Israel and created United Hebrew Congregations. [October 2002]
