Evergreen Cemetery: "The first Jewish cemetery in Fort Lauderdale opened in the 1930s. Before that, local residents also shipped their dead north for burial, usually to Jacksonville." Make immediate right turn onto Miami Road, left on SE 14th Court to SE 10 Avenue. Left on SE 10 to arch. The B'nai Israel section with its 135 graves is a part of the city owned cemetery established in 1910. Plots were purchased in 1935 by the Fort Lauderdale Hebrew Congregation (Established 1931, now Temple Emanu-El, 3245 W. Oakland Pk. Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale, FL.. This burial place for the pioneer residents of Ft. Lauderdale is a historic part of the Jewish experience in Florida. In 1998-99, the City of Fort Lauderdale made significant improvements to the site, including landscaping and perimeter wrought-iron fencing.
