1400 Alabama Avenue SE, Washington, DC. Glenn Easton, Executive Dir. (202) 362-4433. Take Beltway Exit 22B (B-W Pkwy) to I-295 South, then take Suitland Pkwy 1.5 mi. to Stanton Rd. Right on Stanton and follow up hill approx. 1.0 mile to Alabama Ave. Turn right onto Alabama Ave. and proceed to last gate.
Used by Adas Israel Congregation and Agudas Achim Congregation. Adas Israel congregation was formed 1869 by 35 families who left Washington Hebrew Congregation, when the latter adopted practices that differed from the traditional Orthodox. Today, Adas Israel Congregation is the largest Conservative congregation in Washington, DC. The oldest grave identified is that of the stillborn Hammersch twins from June 7, 1870. The cemetery is kept locked and vists must be pre-arranged with the synagogue staff.
In 1988, the Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington (JGSGW) joined with the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington (JHSGW) to document this cemetery. Because the cemetery records were incomplete or totally lacking for some years, synagogue and public records were searched to obtain the information. In 1991, the history and inventory of this project were published in "The Record," the publication of the historical society. In 2008, the genealogy society formatted the data and submitted it to JOWBR. The project is on-going and photographs will be taken of each grave for submission.
