BAD BENTHEIM incorporating GILDEHAUS: 48455 Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) (Gerz, Peters).

I. Old cemetery: At the beginning of the An der Freilichtbühne road.

IN USE: From 17th century. Bush dates the oldest datable gravesone from 1806 and last from 1866.

NUMBER OF GRAVESTONES: 33.

NOTE:

  • Friedrich-Wilhelm Busch included a number of gravestone photographs on which dates were not decipherable; see Piechorowski 1982, pages 191-199.
  • According to local sources the oldest datable gravestome dates from 1761. All gravestones are oriented towards the east and carry only inscriptions in Hebrew. 85 Jews lived in Bad Bentheim in 1880, today there remain 2 Jewish families. II. New cemetery: An der Hilgenstiege.

IN USE: From 1874 until 1931.

NUMBER OF GRAVESTONES: 45.

DOCUMENTATION:

  • 1982 photographs of all gravestones with mapping of graves, and copies of all gravestone inscriptions on behalf of of the County of Bentheim by Friedrich-Wilhelm Busch.

III. Gildehaus: Am Westhang.

IN USE: From 1746 until 13 July 1987 the date of the burial of Heinz Wertheim.

NUMBER OF GRAVESTONES: 2 and also a few gravestone fragments.
