The earliest known Jewish community was 1448. 1939 Jewish population (census) was 2605. Living here was Besht mid-18 [sic]. No other towns or villages used this unlandmarked cemetery. The isolated urban flat land has no sign or marker. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all. A broken masonry wall with no gate surrounds site. 501 to 5000 stones with more than 75% toppled or broken, date from 1810 to 20th century. Removed stones were incorporated into roads or structures. Some tombstones have traces of painting on their surfaces. The cemetery contains unmarked mass graves. The municipality owns the property used for Jewish cemetery and agriculture (crops or animal grazing). Adjacent properties are residential. The cemetery boundaries are smaller now than 1939 because of agriculture. Frequently, local residents visit. The cemetery was vandalized during World War II and frequently in the last ten years. Within the limits of the cemetery are no structures. Vegetation overgrowth is a constant problem, disturbing and stones. Water drainage at the cemetery is a seasonal problem. Very serious threat: uncontrolled access, pollution, vegetation, vandalism, and existing nearby development and proposed nearby development. Moderate threat: weather erosion.
