KIROVOGRAD I:     US Commission No. UA10010102
Alternate names: Kirowograd (Yiddish), (J or Y) Yelisavelgrad (German), Elizabetgrod (Hungarian), Yelisavetgrod (Polish), Jelissawetgrad (Russian), Kirowo, Zinovyesk (Ukraine) and Zinowjewsk (others). Kirovograd is located in Kirovogradskaya at 48º30 32º18, 330 km from Odessa, 350 km from Kharkov, 235 km from Kiev and 157 km from Uman. Present town population is over 100,000 with 1,001-10,000 Jews.

The earliest known Jewish community was 1787. 1939 Jewish population (census) was 18,358. Effecting Jewish Community was April 1881, October 1905, and May 1919 pogroms. The Jewish cemetery was established in 1951 with last known Hasidic burial in 1994. No other towns or villages used this unlandmarked cemetery. The suburban flat land, part of a municipal cemetery, has no sign or marker. Reached by "other," access is open to all. A continuous fence with gate that locks surrounds site. 501 to 5000 stones, most in original location with no stones toppled or broken, date from 1951. Location of any removed tombstones is unknown. The cemetery has no special sections. Some tombstones have iron decorations or lettering, with bronze decorations or lettering, with other metallic elements, portraits on stones, and/or metal fences around graves. The cemetery contains no known mass graves. A regional or national governmental agency owns property now is "other." Adjacent properties are agricultural. The cemetery boundaries is larger now than 1939. Frequently, Jewish or non-Jewish private visitors and local residents visit. The cemetery was vandalized occasionally in the last ten years. Vegetation was cleared in 1951-1994. The government pays the regular caretaker. Within the limits of the cemetery is a well and a pre-burial house with a catafalque. Moderate threat: vegetation. Slight threat: uncontrolled access, pollution and vandalism.

The last known Hasidic burial was 1896. No other towns or villages used this unlandmarked cemetery. The isolated urban flat land has no sign or marker. Reached by "other," access is open to all. No wall, fence, or gate surrounds site. 501 to 5000 stones are all in original location with none toppled or broken. Removed stones were incorporated into roads or structures. The cemetery has no special sections. The cemetery contains no known mass graves. The cemetery property now is residential. Adjacent properties are residential. The cemetery was vandalized during World War II. There is no maintenance. Within the limits of the cemetery are no structures. No threats.

The Jewish cemetery was established in 1896 with last known Hasidic burial in 1951. No other towns or villages used this unlandmarked cemetery. The isolated ur [sic] has no sign or marker. No stones are visible. Removed stones were incorporated into roads or structures. The cemetery contains no known mass graves. The municipality owns the site used for residences. Adjacent properties are residential. The cemetery boundaries are smaller now than 1939 because of housing development. The cemetery was vandalized during World War II. There is no maintenance. Within the limits of the cemetery are no structures. Threats: uncontrolled access, weather erosion, pollution, vegetation, vandalism, and existing nearby development and proposed nearby development.

The last known Hasidic burial was in 1996. No Jews from other towns or villages were murdered here. The unlandmarked urban flat land, separate but near other cemeteries, has no sign or marker. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all. No wall, fence, or gate surrounds the mass grave. No stones are visible or were removed. The mass grave has only common tombstones. The site contains marked mass graves. The municipality owns the property. The mass grave property is now used as Jewish part on a non-Jewish cemetery. Adjacent properties are recreational. The mass grave boundaries is larger now than 1939. Occasionally, organized individual tours and Jewish or non-Jewish private visitors stop. This mass grave has not been vandalized. Local/municipal authorities cleared vegetation 1996. Now, authorities occasionally clean or clear site. Within the limits of the mass grave are no structures. Slight threat: uncontrolled access, vegetation (seasonal) and vandalism.
