Former Hungarian name of the town was Barancs. Zemplinsky Branc is located at 48º33' 21º44', 8 km S of Treisov, Slovakia and 37km SE of Kosice, Slovakia. Cemetery: at the end of the town behind a Christian cemetery on the right hand side entering from the S. Town population is about 600, with no known Jews. The Jewish population as of the last census before World War II was 15. Established in the 1800's, last known Sephardic Orthodox burial date is unknown. Nearby villages also used this cemetery. The rural location, part of a municipal cemetery, has no sign or marker. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all via a stone wall behind it and a locked gate (at times). The Jewish tombstones are in a very densely wooded area. Vegetation is grossly overgrown. A caretaker for the Christian part of the cemetery took us to the tombstones. They would be difficult, if not impossible, to find on your own. The size of cemetery before WWII and now is 1 hectare. 20-50 20th century marble and granite, flat shaped stones, finely smoothed and inscribed stones, flat stones with carved relief decoration, or sculpted monuments, with less than 25% are toppled or broken, are in the site. Inscriptions are Hebrew. A pre-burial house belongs to the Christian cemetery next door. The local community owns site used for Christian burials. Adjacent properties are cemeteries and rural homeowner lands. Cemetery boundaries remain the same since 1940's. The cemetery was not vandalized in the last ten years. Vegetation is a serious threat. The cemetery is reasonably well tended with about a dozen or so tombstones still standing. Apparently the caretaker of the adjacent Christian cemetery cares for it. Source: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. [November 2010]
