Alternate names: Żary [Pol], Sorau [Ger], Sorau in Nieder Lausitz, Zóraw, Soraw. 51°38' N, 15°09' E, 94 miles SW of Poznań (Posen), near the German border. 1900 Jewish population: 154 (in 1880), 90 (in 1933). This town in western Poland with 39,900 inhabitants in 2006 in Lubusz Voivodeship since 1999 and previously in Zielona Góra Voivodeship (1975-1998) on the border between the Silesian Lowland and the Wielkopolska Lowland with tributaries of the Oder River, Bóbr and Nysa Łużycka.
