CEMETERY: Jews from Sandomierz Baranowa buried their dead in the cemetery on the road to the village Skop, first documented in 1718 in the parish records although the cemetery probably existed long before then. According to the yizkor, 400 Jews were buried there over 500 years. Today, its prewar appearance is obscure. Two images remain on a stamp affixed to the back of a photographic establishment in Baranow. During World War II, the Nazis destroyed the cemetery. No gravestones remain since the Germans used them to construct roads. In the center of the cemetery is a small, stylized matzevot monument, commemorating the Jews murdered in the Baranow ghetto. The Office of the City and Municipality in Baranow Sandomierski in 2003 documented the monument erected in 1945 as a mass grave of 60 unidentified Jews as rectangular concrete. A number of depressions probably are traces of graves. In Spring 2007, a Civic Center project called "Traces of the Past" placed cemetery care for students in Public Gimnazjum Skopaniu, who began cleaning the cemetery in 2007. The amount of garbage collected at the cemetery exceeded their expectation including a rusty bed and an old TV. photos. [July 2009]
