Ózd is a city in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, Northern Hungary, 40 km (25 mi) away from county seat Miskolc. The area has been inhabited since ancient times. The village Ózd was first documented in 1242. The modern city came into being with the unification of the towns Ózd, Bolyok, and Sajóvárkony during the Socialist era of Hungary, when heavy industry was developed the northern part of the country. Ózd has a large Roma population. A Jewish community existed prior to WWII, when it was destroyed by the Nazis. [February 2009]
