Alternate names: Cigánd [Hun], Kiscigánd, Kisczigánd, Nagycigánd, Cigánd Város Hivatalos Honlapja at [town website] at 48°15' N, 21°54' E is a small town in northern Hungary, 80 km from county capital Miskolc, 40 km from Sátoraljaújhely, 30 km from Sárospatak and 9 miles WNW of Kisvárda, the only town of the Bodrogköz, near the Slovak border. Two parts, Kisczigánd and Nagycigánd, were reunited in 1922. Jewish population: 298 (1880), 229 (1930) . At one time, the fields provided the living for over 6000 of the village, but now its population is 3600. Situated on the right bank of the River Tisza, the area has been inhabited since ancient times. Before the Hungarians conquered the area, Slavic and Avar tribes lived here. Cigánd was first mentioned in documents in 1289. Its residents were fishmen, hunters, and serfs. In 1347 the village was divided into two parts because of a debate over ownership, the two parts were called Small Cigánd and Greater Cigánd. The two parts were reunited in 1922. After the regulation of the Tisza river, the village got arable land and grew potatoes.Cigánd was granted town status on July 1, 2004. town website in Hungarian. [February 2009]
