HARTMANICE: (Harmanitz in German) used cemetery at Kundratice
In the first half of the 19th century, Jews lived in this poor region of the Šumava Mountains. The 1883 synagogue in Hartmanice near Sušice underwent a complete restoration from 2003 to 2006. Address of synagogue: Horská synagoga Hartmanice, Hartmanice , 342 01 Sušice. The synagogue for more than 200 Jews was later a carpenter's workshop and a warehouse for used truck tires. Now, the Hartmanice Memorial Association reopened the synagogue at the highest elevation in the Czech Republic and received the Jury Award in the National Building of the Year Contest for 2006. Inside you can find modern expositions and multimedia presentations focusing on the co-existence of Czech, German and Jewish inhabitants in the Šumava Mountains was opened. In 1997 a museum in the neighbouring village of Dobrá Voda had an exhibition of rabbi and historian Dr. Simon Adler and his family as well as Jewish history in the Šumava borderland. Visitors may view the exhibition of the everyday life of the Jewish minority in the region, documentation of 110 extinct Jewish villages in Western Bohemia and learn about kosher slaughtering. Hartmanice is the oldest seat in the so-called High Šumava. The customs office already existed in this place on the trade route in 1209. Later it was medieval miner's seat near gold mining]. It became a small town at the beginning of the 14th century with many rights and its importance grew till the beginning of the 17th century. During the Thirty Years' War it was burnt down and was desolate for a long time. The new development of the town began in the second half of the 17th century. The remains can be found in the forest about 3 km west of the town. The oldest building in Hartmanice is the Late-Gothic St. Catherine's Church... from the 15th century with its present appearance from the Baroque reconstructions in the 18th century. The single-aisled church has a tower on the western side. The fountain in the small square originates from the first half of the 19th century. The Christian pilgrimage place Dobrá Voda ("Good Water") lies on the slope of the Březník mountain about 3 km south of Hartmanice.
