Once was a substantial Jewish shtetl from the 17th century (charter granted to the Jews January 11, 1667 by Michael Casimir Pacz, castellan of Vilna, and confirmed by King August III March 9, 1739). In 1780, at a visit of Catherine II, the Jewish population of 355 out of 1,057 possessed one synagogue. Jewish population: 1803 - 453; 1870 - 2,433 and in 1897- 2,775 and 7,444 in Chausy district.
