CEMETERY:
- The Torquay & Paignton Hebrew Congregation Cemetery is the Jewish Section of the Paignton Cemetery, situated off Ailescooad, Colley End Road, Paignton
The cemetery was acquired in 1962. There is a Layout of the Cemetery on JCR-UK, prepared by Rosemary Hoffman, showing the position of each gravestone and the name of each of some 90 persons interred in the Cemetery. The All-UK Database on JewishGen includes the records (with images) of burial at this cemetery [Source; David Shulman, Webmaster of JCR-UK, 2012]
An unusual feature, lying just outside the Jewish burial area (separated by trees from the main Jewish area), are the gravestones of two men, incised with a Star of David at the top and a cross at the bottom, suggesting that both men interred here were Jewish, while their respective wives were not. Access: Usual cemetery hours. Turn into Ailescombe Road from Colley End Road. After about 250 yards, turn into the burial grounds on the right.(there are other burial grounds on the left). Continue along short cemetery road until roundabout. Access to the Jewish section of the cemetery is the immediately in front of you, behind a small building (the prayer hall).
