Ceuta is a Spanish territorial enclave (as is the smaller Melilla) located along Morocco's Mediterranean coast. Ceuta is next to the Moroccan city of Tetuan and is directly across the Stait of Gibraltar from Algeciras and Gibraltar. It had been held by Portugal from 1415 and continued to be ruled as part of the Portuguese empire when Portugal and Spain were united under a single monarch from 1580 to 1640. On Portugal regaining its independence in 1640, Ceuta opted for Spanish rule and remained Spanish, even following the independence of Spanish Morocco in 1956.
