48°37′37″N 7°34′25″E This commune in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace, NE France grew along an old Roman road leading from Strasbourg to Saverne.
A place of worship existed from 1777 in Quatzenheim (Twatzene) in the home of an individual, probably the same building that was transformed into synagogue in 1819. Used as a meeting room during WWII, the Jewish community had been decimated by deportations. Services took place in the small prayerhouse located in the same building until 1980. The still active Jewish cemetery in Quatzenheim was created in 1793. Surrounded by a sandstone wall, the old part in the SW includes about 100 gravestones from the late 18th to the mid-19th centuries. About 180 neoclassical gravestones in the NW part are from mid-19th century to early 20th century. The NE section includes about 50 gravestones from the early 20th century. The gravestones are granite. The SE is unoccupied. A Holocaust memorial is located at the main entrance of Principal Street.
