In the arrondissement of Altkirch, the 1999 population was 61,242. Solomon Klein (born at Bischheim on October 14, 1814; died at Colmar, November 10, 1867) was successively district rabbi at Bischheim (1839-41), Durmenach (1841-48), and Rixheim (1848-50). From 1850 to 1867 he was grand rabbi at Colmar. Up to the middle of the 19th century, Durmenach was one of the most important communities of the Haut-Rhin, the number of the Jewry exceeding that of the Christian inhabitants. Antij-Jewish riots broke out in 1789 and 1848. The synagogue, built in 1803, was burned by 1970. A hotel was constructed on its place. The community was the seat of a rabbinate of the end of the 18th century until 1910. It has completely disappeared today. [January 2008]
