51°19' N 21°52' E, 74.3 miles SSE of Warszawa. Janowiec is a village in Puławy County, Lublin Voivodeship in eastern Poland and the seat of the administrative district called Gmina Janowiec 12 km (7 mi) SW of Puławy and 49 km (30 mi) W of the regional capital Lublin. The village has a population of 1,000. It received its town charter in 1537, but lost it in 1870. The ruins of a large castle are nearby. Jewish cemetery in Janowiec is located about 300 meters east of the Main Square (Rynek). IEstablished in the end of the 16th century, probably after 1580 when the very first Jews settled in Janowiec. In 1921, the town was in 20% Jewish (261). The last burial on the 0.7 ha cemetery took place in 1942. During World War II the cemetery was destroyed. Not een fragments of matzevot are left. Janowiec is in Lublin province at 51º19 21º54, 60 km from Lublin and 11 km from Putawy. The cemetery location is about 300 meters E of market square near outskirts of town. Present town population is 1,000-5,000 with no Jews.

The earliest known Jewish community was about 1580. 1921 Jewish population was 261, about 20%. The cemetery was established in the 4th quarter of 16th century with last known Orthodox Jewish burial in 1942. The isolated unlandmarked suburban hillside has no sign. Reached by turning off a public road, access is open to all with no fence or gate. The size of the cemetery before WWII was about 0.7 ha. No gravestones are visible. There are no known mass graves. The cemetery is currently used to graze animals. Adjacent land is residential or barren and unvisited. It was vandalized during and after World War II. There has been no maintenance. The unfenced cemetery boundaries are difficult to determine. There is a serious threat of development the area as its original function is falling into oblivion.
