Coat of arms of Chełmża Alternate names: Chełmża [Pol], Culmsee [Ger], Kulmsee [Ger], Chlumže [Cz], Chelmzha, 53°11' N, 18°37' E, 26 miles E of Bydgoszcz (Bromberg), 10 miles N of Toruń (Thorn). CEMETERY: map The cemetery located on 3 Maja Street was destroyed completely during WWII is now built over. The half-hectare Jewish Cemetery was established in 1792 on a small hill, the current ul. 3 Maja. The site had a wall and a pre-burial house at the entrance. In 1939 the Nazis destroyed the cemetery. After the liberation of the land taken over the cemetery treasury. In 2004 the parcel was returned to the Union of Jewish Religious Communities. photo of site. [April 2009]
