53°09' N, 18°11' E, 72 miles NE of Poznań (Posen), 8 miles E of Bydgoszcz (Bromberg). Fordon also is a district in Bydgoszcz with about 75,000 people. Fordon synagogue belonged to the State Treasury for sixty years and then for tens years abandoned before becoming the property of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Jewish Heritage in Poland. The city's conservator of monuments ordered a costly new roof for the building. The only way to avoid that expense was to turn over ownership of the building to a cultural institution favored by local authorities. [April 2009]
