Our community -- children, families and teachers -- helped restore a Jewish cemetery in suburban [Budapest], Paty. This cemetery, fully destroyed in the Holocaust, has only one tomb that could be saved but the rest of the cemetery was cleaned and marked. We have plans to restore another small cemetery in Budakeszi, another suburb, which seems to date from the 17th century. It has about 30-40 tombs, some broken marble with Hebrew letters. We are organizing a professional volunteer to help with the reconstruction. Source: Catherine Engel; This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. The small Jewish cemetery in the trees with only a few gravestones is on the edge of town behind a row of houses called Barackos. In Budakeszi, turn right at the sign leading towards Páty and then next to the road on the right side after the Barackos junction. [March 2009]
