Alternate names: Susz [Pol], Rosenberg [Ger], Rosenberg in Westpreußen. 53°43' N, 19°21' E, 52 miles SSE of Gdańsk (Danzig). Jewish population: 145 (in 1880), 48 (in 1939). Słownik Geograficzny Królestwa Polskiego (1880-1902), XI, pp. 603-605: "Susz". In 1793 only one Jewish family lived there and two in 179. Jewish population: 1817-81, 1855-153, 1861-181 Jews, 1885-126, 1895-105, 1900-75, 1925- 45, 1932-50, and 1937-72. In 1821, a synagogue built on two plots at the then Schmalestraße (now the Wąska street), the former Kirchenstraße. The building remains in relatively good condition today. In the mid 1990s, it was handed over to Jewish community in Gdansk, but since then deteriorated. Previously, it housed the headquarters of Suskiego Center of Culture. [July 2009]
CEMETERY: Planned in 1803, Josef Elias Hirche purchased land along the road to Michałów between marshes and Rożnów Tannenbruche in Osiedle Forest for 6 talarów, but only if the land for the cemetery was released in 1853 when the size increased from 0.1 to 0.15 ha. The cemetery may or may not have been disturbed during Kristallnacht since Jewish-Christian relations were otherwise good; the synagogue was not burned. No trace of the cemetery remains, only the lane and an outline of the place beyond the fence. Photos. [July 2009]
