3700 Jews from Odessa were murdered in v. Balalaychuk in November 1941 and March 1942. The unlandmarked Jewish mass grave was dug in 1941. The suburban and rural (agricultural) flat land has no sign or marker. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all with no wall, fence, or gate. The approximate size is now 0.01 hectares. No stones were removed. The site contains unmarked mass graves. The municipality owns the property only used for mass burial site. Adjacent properties are farm. Rarely, local residents visit. The mass grave was vandalized during World War II. There is no maintenance or structures. Vegetation overgrowth is a seasonal problem preventing access. Water drainage at the mass grave is a seasonal problem. Very serious threat: uncontrolled access, pollution and existing nearby development. Moderate threat: weather erosion, vegetation, vandalism, and proposed nearby development.
Oks Vladimir Moiseevich of 270065, Odessa, Varnenskaya St., 17D, Apt. 52 [ph: (0482) 665950] visited site in 01/1995 and interviewed Sych A.M. of Berezovka in 01/1995 and Yuditskiy S.M. of Berezovka in 01/1995. He completed survey on 02/17/1995. Other documentation was inaccessible.
