Alternate names: Якутск; Yakut: Дьокуускай, Cokúskay at 62°02' N 129°44' E is the capital city of Sakha Republic about 450 kilometers (280 mi) south of the Arctic Circle. Population: 269,601(2010) Yakutsk is a major port on the Lena River and a major supplier of diamonds. Average winter temperature is -34 °C (-30 °F), which makes Yakutsk the coldest city of its size or greater in the world.

  • My friend Shaul Hollender in Kiryat Tivon, Israel, worked in the far eastern parts of Russia in 1998 and once visited Yakutsk where he took photos at the Jewish cemetery. Lately I helped connect two of the photos to family trees. In the last case, Randy Schoenberg added the photo to Miriam Leah Halberstam's profile on Geni. Some gravestonesare made of wood!
