Gmina Wieleń is an urban-rural administrative district in Greater Poland Voivodeship in west-central Poland with its seat in the town of Wieleń, 27 km (17 mi) W of Czarnków and 75 km (47 mi) NW of the regional capital Poznań. The gmina 2006 total population was 12,572 (town population of Wieleń was 5,940). Beside the town of Wieleń, Gmina Wieleń contains the villages and settlements of Biała, Dębogóra, Dzierżążno Małe, Dzierżążno Wielkie, Folsztyn, Gieczynek, Gulcz, Hamrzysko, Herburtowo, Kałądek, Kocień Wielki, Kuźniczka, Marianowo, Mężyk, Miały, Nowe Dwory, Rosko, Wrzeszczyna and Zielonowo. The Jewish community existed since the mid-17th century. The pre-WWII Jewish population was 54. The synagogue existed from the 17th century. In 1785, a new one was built and burned down the same year. Another new one was built in 1787 and destroyed in 1939. The unlandmarked Progressive/Reform cemetery was established in the beginning of the 19th century. The isolated suburban flat land has no sign or marker. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all with no fence, wall, or gate. Before WWII the cemetery was about 1. ha. It was liquidated. No stones or known mass graves exist. The municipality owns the property used for industrial/commercial purposes. Adjacent property is agricultural. Boundaries are smaller due to commercial or industrial development. It was vandalized during World War II with no care or maintenance. Within the limits of the cemetery is a gravedigger's house. No threats.
