Alternate names: Zapyškis [Lith], Sapieżyszki [Pol], Sapezhishki [Rus], Sapizishok [Yid], Zapyškio, Zapishkis, Sapieżyszla, Sapezhizhky, Posëlok Sapezhishki, Сапежишки. 54°55' N, 23°40' E, 9 miles W of Kaunas (Kovno), 27 miles NNE of Marijampolė. Zapyskis is located on the left bank of the river Nemunas. In 16th century the property of Zapyskis belonged to the Sapiego family and was called Panemune, then Tarpupis and Sapiegiskis. First mentioned in 1575, the town was on a very important trade and post road: Kaunas-Virbale. 1900 Jewish population: about 200. [March 2009]
