A small shtetl about 15 miles NE of Dvinsk (Daugavpils) in Vitebsk guberniya of the Russian Empire. Višķi in SE Latvia in an area known as Latgale is a small town in the Daugavpils district (formerly Dvinsk). Višķi settlement began in the 17th century with the Jewish community formed at the end of the 18th century. 1935 Jewish population: 423 in a total population of 750. Until post WW II, majority population of Višķi was Jewish.Within the week of German entry into Kraslova, Jews of Kraslova, Griva, Preili, Vishki, Livani, Dagda and smaller shtetls were ordered to collect in three synagogues in Kraslava for deportation on July 28, 1941. Allowed to hire carts to bring processions with them, they were guarded overnight at the crowded synagogues by the Latvian auxiliary police and the following day were escorted by the police in carts and on foot 40 km to the newly established Ghetto in Daugavpils.
