Shire of Coolgardie, Western Australia, Australia. at 30°55' S 121°08' E. Date of earliest known Jewish community in town is 1894 when the unlandmarked, still active cemetery was established. The town is an old gold mining town that once had 20,000 people in the late 1890s and early 1900s. When gold was first discovered thousands of people arrived. The town had 23 hotels, 6 banks, 2 stock exchanges and 3 newspapers. It now has about 800 people with 1 hotel. As far as I am aware there are now no Jewish people living in Coolgardie. The nearest Jewish community is in Perth 558 kilometers away. The cemetery is one of nine remote cemeteries in the State of Western Australia that has Jewish burials. Care is provided by shire workers. The cemetery location is in the eastern goldfields of Western Australia on flat land and part of the municipal cemetery. A sign in English reads Coolgardie General Cemetery. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all via a continuous wire fence and an unlocked gate. The general cemetery is divided by religious sections. The Jewish section has no divisions. ·
The oldest gravestone is dated 3 April 1895. The five nineteenth century gravestones in cemetery are in original location. Graves without a proper marker have natural stone borders. A communal metal memorial plate marks all burials. Some have iron decorations or lettering, bronze decorations or lettering other than metallic elements, metal fences around graves. Inscriptions are in Hebrew and English, English for the memorial plate. The Coolgardie Jewish cemetery contains 24 graves, of which five have proper gravestones.
The present owner of the cemetery property is the municipality. Adjacent properties are open space. Visits to the Jewish section are very rare. The cemetery is known to have been vandalized. Past maintenance: restoring and marking all graves and clearing bush by Jewish individuals from Perth: Warren and Brenda Austin and Andrew and Gwen Carver in September 2004. No current care. No structures. No threats. The vegetation overgrowth in the cemetery is a problem. Water drainage at the cemetery is good all year.
