The actual community of Barr dates only from the second half of the 19th century. Having done up a prayer room in 1868, the Jewry of Barr constructed a synagogue in 1878. In the course of the nineteenth century, they added a room of meeting-prayer and a ritual bath. During Occupation, the synagogue was damaged. The building was torn down in 1982, following the collapse of a structural column. The stained glass windows of the synagogue were put in the prayer room of Meinau and certain stones, which contained the tables of Law, are kept in the park of Foundation Elisa in Strasbourg. Between 1910 and 1944, Barr had become the seat of rabbinate instead of Dambach-la-Ville.
The Jews of Barr were buried in the burying ground of Rosenwiller, one of the most ancient Jewish burying grounds of Alsace. The site was not destroyed or vandalized. It is permanently opened and maintained by the village of Rosenwiller. [January 2008]
